Now is the time! The rhododendrons are blooming, and the Jenkins Estate (just south of South Hillsboro) has hundreds of them of all varieties and sizes.
Some fun facts from Wikipedia’s Rhododendron Entry:
- Rhododendron means “rose-tree.” Seems fitting for the Portland area.
- Honey made from some varieties has been known to have hallucinogenic effects and make people or animals sick. Just ask the old Roman general Pompey.
- Azaleas are related and in the rhododendron genus.
While there, consider a walk-thru of the splendid display garden (up by Rivendell park). It’s in the eastern section of Jenkins and might give you some plant ideas and inspiration as most plants are well-labeled.
Jenkins Estate is at the edge of Beaverton, Aloha, and Hillsboro at the corner of Farmington and Grabhorn/209th. Here’s the google maps link: Jenkins Estate.
