This article has me thinking about the strange dance technology does with culture and law.
The article highlights how Tesla is recalling 54,000 cars because it’s car software included a “Rolling Stop” under one of its self-driving modes. I’m certain they’re not the only software/car makers trying to navigate such issues.
On the one hand, the idea itself does not seem that crazy, that the software under certain very cautions conditions would perform a “rolling stop” for the car. That’s something I’m sure many if not most drivers do regularly.
On the other hand, it is a bit crazy that someone thought it was a good idea to train the software to perform an action that is illegal. If you get a ticket, I’m fairly certain that Tesla will not pay the ticket for you.
It’ll be interesting to see how the continued push for automation changes how people drive, how roads and cities are designed, and how liability issues are handled for car insurance claims.
